Sanskriti’s Charity Endeavours
Sanskriti formalised the decade long charitable community activities by opting for a registered charity status in January 2021. This was backed by the trustees so our resolve to give back to the community is stronger than ever.
Sanskriti, in 2022, has started a collaboration with an existing charity in India, who are working at ground level and supporting them in bringing about some crucial upliftment for the poorest. We have developed a strong relationship with Swadhina, a charity organisation in India. In collaboration with them, we have launched a much-awaited charity project, an initiative to uplift through education, the lives of young girls in the Musabani area of Jharkhand.
Over the years, Sanskriti has been supporting charities back in India who work towards betterment of life amongst the under-privileged as well as the elderly population. Sanskriti has raised valuable funds to support migrant workers in India during Covid and for relief of people hit by cyclone Amphan.
In our endeavour to spread Indian culture among the public in UK, we have organised several Indian/Bengali programmes (drama, music, songs and literature) encouraging active community participation. On several occasions Sanskriti has invited recognized singers and musicians from India to perform in UK, thus giving Indian diaspora the opportunity to experience high quality cultural programmes here in the UK.
Our charity journey continues these shores through food bank contributions and clothes collections for those who are affected by the cost of living and the resultant crisis faced by many.
The Musabani Story
This is the story of Musabani children.
Swadhina, is a charity who took on the mantle to educate young girls in this poor backward area of Musabani, in Ghatsila, Jharkhand. However, Covid hit them, and this initiative could not be revived in the post pandemic times due to various reasons. We at Sanskriti, were enraptured by the story of these eager little girls who would lose out on the chance for betterment, due to unfortunate circumstances. Thus began the journey of Sanskriti with Swadhina and through them, with these wonderful young people, whose progress and learning never ceases to amaze and thrill us.
Musabani’s political infrastructure is a traditional setup, and the village Panchayat has a lot of say in its inhabitants’ lives. A lot of diplomatic negotiations ensured that the girls could use the local schoolhouse in the afterhours for their learning sessions and this was a huge step forward as it ensures a stable location for their lessons. It was a great sense of achievement towards a greater purpose, for Sanskriti, when the project was inaugurated on 15th August 2022, with the girls flying paper flags and singing the national anthem. The event was well attended by the members of the Panchayat, teachers, local dignitaries and of course Sanskriti members. While the rest of the country celebrated the freedom of the nation, we at Sanskriti celebrated the freedom from ignorance, for these young people.
Ms Suman Soy has taken on the responsibility as centre teacher- here is her story. Suman lives in a village called Benasole with a cousin sister Rashmi. Both Suman and Rashmi are very educated. This has been possible because of their own interest, and proximity to Ghatsila where two colleagues are located. Rashmi was also a teacher earlier. Now Rashmi's household responsibilities are more since her mother goes out to work as daily wage earner. So, Suman has been taken on the responsibilities of a teacher this time.
That is what Musabani children project is about. Enabling small things that matter, that shape lives and powering the dream for a better existence. The successful launching and sustained progress of this project has given us all a huge sense of purpose. Sanskriti members visit the girls in Jharkhand, as and when in India, with little tokens and gifts to encourage them to continue their journey of education.
The HCI Story
Sanskriti extended collaborative work on hardship in India with HCI (Healthy Climate Initiative, USA) with focus on environmental issues The focus was melting of Himalayan glaciers causing extensive floods, land erosion and loss of human habitation.
Sanskriti teamed up with HCI and Bright Ice organisations to raise public awareness for Climate Benefit Concert. During the 5 days of COP27, the concert covered worldwide artists with strong patronage keynote speakers like Santanu Moitra and Kate Walsh.
The key theme for Climate Benefit Concert was a global conservation celebration using the universal language and the power of Art to showcase the incredible solution-driven work of leading conservationists, scientists, and organizations from around the world. The concert was well attended and is now leading to field trial of the technology at Chota Sigri glacier in India.
